Pretty local towns and villages

We have many characterful towns and villages nearby. Shaftesbury, with its famous Gold Hill, is close, and Sherborne, a little further away, is packed with tempting independent shops, restaurants and cafes.

Monday is market day at our local town, Sturminster Newton – worth a browse – and there’s a Saturday market at nearby Blandford. Dorset’s county town, Dorchester, was founded by the Romans and has an excellent museum.

The Wessex Ridgeway

This part of the Wessex Ridgeway, running through the Blackmore Vale, gives us Shillingstone Hill, the picturesque backdrop that makes Loose Reins Country so special.

Hardy Country

The writer and poet Thomas Hardy lived at nearby Sturminster Newton for a while. The beginning of his novel ‘Tess of the D’Urbervilles’ is set in this area and ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’ was recently filmed in Sherborne.
